Weekly Music Theory – A Full Year of Rhythms & Melodies for Your Grade 1 Music Class (Beginner Level)

Looking for music activities for your grade 1 music class? These fun seasonal themed rhythms and solfege melodies (one for each week) are the perfect start to each music class.

  • Build a strong routine with a fun and engaging activity to activate your students’ brains at the beginning of each music class
  • Feel confident that all of your students are building fundamental pitch and rhythm skills

This 3-Month Music Theory Pack includes:

  • A Powerpoint presentation with embedded sound files (1 slide for each weekly class, four classes per month, for a total of 12 weeks)
  • Each slide includes a rhythm pattern and a solfege melody pattern with a sound file for students to clap/sing along with

All you need to deliver these activities are:

  • A computer with speakers and a way to share the screen with students (smartboard, projector, etc)

How do I use this?

These weekly patterns reinforce the two most fundamental musical skills – rhythm and pitch. By introducing a new pattern each week, your students will become more confident musicians and singers! I recommend using these patterns as your warm up (10 min or so) at the beginning of each class as an activator.

Rhythm:

  • Introduce/review the seasonal words used in each monthly set. Note how many syllables are in each word.
  • Note that the rhythm is included in three versions: seasonal words, beat counts, and Kodaly rhythm syllables.
  • Play the sound clip. The rhythm will play, followed by four beats of silence in which the students will repeat the rhythm back. This will repeat three times.
  • As students repeat the rhythm back, encourage them to say the seasonal words, beat counts or Kodaly rhythm syllables each time.
  • As you work through the year, ask students to try to read the rhythm on their own first before you play the sound clip.

Melody:

  • Introduce/review the solfege names and hand signs used in the pattern.
  • Note that the melody is included in three versions: solfege note names, solfege hand signs, and absolute note names.
  • Play the sound clip. The melody will play, followed by four beats of silence in which the students will repeat the melody back. This will repeat three times.
  • As you work through the year, ask students to try to read the melody on their own first before you play the sound clip.
  • If you have appropriate pitched instruments, you could also have students try playing the melody.

This package was created based on the Ontario Curriculum, but will likely align with other curriculums as well.
